Why We DON’T Walk in the Grass!

We understand the allure of the lush and picturesque meadows that surround Lauterbrunnen. The desire to frolic in their beauty is undeniable, especially with the captivating photos and videos flooding social media, enticing more and more people to do the same.

However, it is crucial to shed light on why running through the tall grass is strongly discouraged and why it is considered deeply disrespectful to the local community.

  1. Private Property
We must acknowledge the importance of respecting private property rights. The meadows you encounter are not public spaces but the cherished fields of hardworking farmers. Trespassing without permission undermines their ownership and their right to control access to their land.

  2. The Cows!
Venturing into the tall grass poses a risk of damaging the very crops that feed the cows through the winter. Each field represents countless hours of labor, meticulous care, and significant investments. Trampling through the crops, put simply, is destroying a good proportion of this valuable asset..

  3. Disrupting Farming
Running through the tall grass disrupts the ongoing farming activities. Farmers rely on specific schedules and access to their fields for essential tasks, such as machinery operations or crop management. Your presence can inadvertently hinder their work or cause unnecessary inconvenience.

  4. Preserving Ecosystems
Let's not forget the importance of preserving the delicate balance of the ecosystem. Agricultural fields support a variety of plant and animal species, and disturbing this ecosystem can have unintended consequences. Nests, burrows, and habitats can be destroyed, and wildlife can be disturbed by your presence.

  5. Potential Risks
Lastly, from a safety standpoint, unauthorised entry into these fields poses potential risks. Farmers have a responsibility to maintain the safety of their land, and accidents or injuries can occur when unauthorised individuals roam freely. Such incidents can lead to legal complications for both the trespasser and the farmer.

To foster positive relationships within the community and promote a harmonious coexistence between everyone, it is essential to respect the hard work, property rights, and personal space of farmers.

If you are genuinely interested in exploring agricultural areas, we encourage you to seek permission from the landowners or utilise designated paths and trails when available.

Let us appreciate the beauty of these meadows while preserving the livelihoods and efforts of the local farming community. By doing so, we contribute to a more sustainable and respectful tourism experience.
